Death At The Mall is a project examining the state our culture is in.
It is not intended to be morbid, but to acknowledge how many of the things we have come to rely on, that give us a sense of ourselves as ‘(post)modern people’, are starting to look a bit shaky.
Sex, gender, cinema, writing, pornography, reading, subcultures, ‘reality’ – nothing is sacred in the age of shopping and looking and being looked at.
Death At The Mall is the idea and creation of Quiet Riot Girl.
The original concept has very much evolved out of her readings of the work of Mark Simpson. In her work supporting his publication of his latest book, Metrosexy, she commented:
“A Roland Barthes for the i-phone generation. Simpson is our very own ’meticulous observer’ of the contemporary world, who somehow manages to make the death of culture sound seriously sexy”
She is using Simpson’s work as a starting point for this investigation into ‘the death of culture’, specifically the dissolution of gender and sexuality categories as we have known them.
QRG always references Simpson carefully but if ever she fails to do so adequately, or misrepresents his work/ideas in any way, she hopes he would tell her.
Death at the Mall should become a book, to be published some time in 2012.
